During this 3-day course, participants will experience hands-on training to integrate skills and knowledge learned from the ATPA Academy of Aquatic Physical Therapy Certificate of Clinical Competency Series. Emphasis will be placed on handling techniques in order to equip participants with the confidence to use their knowledge in a wide array of treatment applications.
Utilizing the unique properties of water and pool equipment, participants will be challenged to maximize the effectiveness of their treatments. A variety of aquatic therapy techniques will be demonstrated and multiple case studies will aid the learner in understanding the aquatic therapy continuum from evaluation to discharge to wellness.
The majority of the course will be spent in the pool. Participants will be tested on their handling skills as well as their integration of online and pool course materials.

Emily Dunlap, PT, has a BS from Simmons College and has specialized in aquatic physical therapy since 1988. She has been active with the APTA Academy of Aquatic Physical Therapy since 1992 and was chairperson during the development of the Clinical Competency Certificate program. She has authored chapters in 3 aquatic therapy textbooks and published original research on waterproof dressings in aquatic settings. Emily is certified in Halliwick, Bad Ragaz Ring Method, and Ai Chi and Watsu (level III). Presently, Emily is the owner of Aquatic Therapy Pro, doing a variety of work as a researcher, clinician, and education consultant. She is also a recent graduate student working towards her Ph.D. in exercise physiology and is part of the Cardiovascular Aging Research Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin.
Megan Cohen, PT, DPT, graduated from the University of Miami in 2017 with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy. She has an accomplished resume in aquatics as a lifeguard, triathlete, swim instructor, and coach. She received her Certificate of Clinical Competency through the Academy of Aquatic Physical Therapy in 2017 and now sits on the Board of the Academy as Director of Communications. Her clinical experience includes working in aquatic therapy with patients of all ages and treating general orthopedics and neurological disorders. When she's not working, you can find Megan at the beach or on a stand-up paddleboard.
Shelly E Muhlenkamp PT, MSPT, has always been interested in aquatic exercise, from high school swim teams to triathlon competitions throughout her life. Shelly has completed lifeguard and swim coach instructor training through the Red Cross. She has participated in safety and education courses sponsored by the Aquatic Therapy and Rehab Institute (ATRI) and the Academy of Aquatic Physical Therapy (AAPT) and completed her Certified Pool and Spa Operator (CPO) Certification in 2019. Shelly is a Board Certified Specialist in Geriatrics and was elected Secretary of the Aquatic Academy of Physical Therapy in 2021.
